Broken Things We’ve seen pastures of plenty and fields of lack Lost our way, lost our faith and the shirt off our backs And I gave up hoping for a guarantee But love keeps her promise every time you look at me And somewhere between hell and sheer happiness There’s a house by the ocean side And we’ll fill it with dreams and all the broken things That the morning washed in with the tide I’m ice and I am fire, you are meek and mild Wanna drink your cool water, wanna bear you a child But some wishes never get to grow their wings And these expectations might just be the death of me And somewhere between hell and sheer happiness There’s a house by the ocean side And we’ll fill it with dreams and all the broken things That the morning washed in with the tide We all travel these miles, we are haunted by quiet regrets With this ache in our bones and desires untold and unmet Isn’t anybody coming for us yet? And somewhere between hell and sheer happiness There’s a house by the ocean side And we’ll fill it with dreams and all the broken things That the morning washed in with the tide

Redman 02:55
Redman White man come to take our land White man come to take our land Got an arrow and a bow and a-fightin’ I will go When the white man come to take our land Two years walkin’ on the Trail of Tears Two years walkin’ on the Trail of Tears Lost a sister and a child to the clutches of the wild Spent two years walkin’ on the Trail of Tears And I never knew The earth was a thing you could own But if so then someday let them call this The land of the redman Don’t know why their promise was a lie Don’t know why their promise was a lie Cause the grass still grows and the water still flows Don’t know why their promise was a lie And I never knew The earth was a thing you could own But if so then someday let them call this The land of the redman I’ll take my honor to the grave I’ll take my honor to the grave Cause they can shoot me down, blood run into the ground But I’ll take my honor to the grave I’ll take my honor to the grave And I never knew The earth was a thing you could own But if so then someday let them call this The land of the redman

Jericho 03:16
Jericho The ground is shaking these days High and low I go to find there’s nowhere safe I crash around in the holes Vacancies that only a heart can know Jericho A fortress made of stones No protection left except some skin and bones But we’re infinitely more Than just the sum of all the pain that’s come before Jericho… Maybe our walls come crashing down Maybe it’s so we can be found Joining our voices with the sound of redemption Maybe there’s so much more than this Maybe we’re living all there is We’ve all got suffering no one gets an exemption Maybe we need no best defense Maybe when we stop fighting against We find that in our nakedness is ascension Jericho

Blue Bonnets 04:49
Blue Bonnets Blue bonnets grow on the hillside Where we once lay entwined Till the sunrise And by daylight Love had made us a child Blue bonnets folded in the nursery That I made with eager hands As we waited For the day when We would bring our baby home I will love you Like no other Precious baby I, your mother I recall the day I felt you slip away Before one single breath Same day your birth and death Blue bonnets grow on the hillside Where we laid you to rest In the autumn Long ago Singin’ “I’ll Fly Away” How I loved you Like no other Precious baby I, your mother I’ll fly away oh glory I’ll fly away When I die hallelujah, by and by I’ll fly away I’ll fly away

Loud & Clear Get on with your choice already, Go You hear the sound of my voice but nobody’s home You’re talking like it’s you against the world You’re so misunderstood, You’re so secure And you’re nobody’s fool And love is coming at you loud and clear But the truth is something that you don’t want to hear Like a bird whose cage swings open wide You could make your escape but your wings aren’t flying You’re searching all of creation for a sign For some justification of all you’re denying And love is coming at you loud and clear But the truth is something that you don’t want to hear And what do you say when your face to face With all of the lies you been telling to chase Away all the fear that you can’t erase What do you say in that quiet place? And what do you say when your face to face With all of the lies you been telling to chase Away all the fear that you can’t erase What do you say to your own face?

'Atta Girl 03:16
‘Atta Girl ‘Atta girl got the world on your shoulders And you’ve pulled up those bootstraps real tight Heaven knows it’ll all fall to pieces If you fail to play your cards right But can you tell me where all the perfect girls go to disappear? Girl you shine in the finest threads All the fellas turn heads as you pass Keep in mind that the loveliest faces Win all the best places in class But can you tell me where all the pretty girls go to disappear?

Songbird 03:21
Songbird When we met, you were just a girl Running arms wide open to the world And you were shining like a diamond in the rough You knew the beauty deep inside you was enough And I wish I’d warned you then That life can steal your innocence And now I see the light behind your eyes is dim Oh but I remember when You were a dreamer; you were no ordinary girl You’d search a hundred empty oysters for the pearl A little songbird, spreading music all around You always knew where tiny treasures could be found And I wish I’d warned you then That life can steal your innocence And now I see the light behind your eyes is dim Oh but I remember when There’s a million broken pieces of your heart laid on the line And you’re looking for the reason to go on But in your dark and sacred night Do you still dream of taking flight? Do you hear that far, familiar song? And can you start to sing along? You were always wishing on a star or in a well Cross your heart and hope to die before you’d tell And you loved giving from the little that you had You saw the good in every heart and not the bad And I wish I’d warned you then That life can steal your innocence And now I see the light behind your eyes is dim Oh but I remember when

Voice of an Angel (For Hollitt) Swear I heard the voice of an angel calling High above the noise from some hallowed hall Like a little bird on my windowsill humming Swear I heard the voice of an angel call No need to worry And don’t you cry The time for that has passed us by Swear I heard the voice of an angel calling High above the noise from some hallowed hall Like a little bird on my windowsill humming Swear I heard the voice of an angel call No need for sorrow And have no fear It seems the time is drawing near And I’ll see you on the high ground Yeah I’ll see you on the high ground And I’ll meet you by that sea of crowns Oh I’ll see you on the high ground Swear I heard the voice of an angel calling High above the noise from some hallowed hall Like a little bird on my windowsill humming Swear I heard the voice of an angel call Oh, swear I heard the voice of an angel call

Story of Our Own There is a voice Calling out of the darkness Coming out of forgiveness Running out of the waters As the land of a thousand hills Makes the sound of hope come to her sons and daughters Can you hear the song that’s rising from the ashes? See the children dancing free in a place called home Though the rain may come we will stay here until it passes Cause we are here to tell a story of our own, it’s all our own There is a voice Calling over the mountains Coming over the madness Running over the miles Like a wild fire coming from one match So then let us one by one be reconciled Can you hear the song that’s rising from the ashes? See the children dancing free in a place called home Though the rain may come we will stay here until it passes Cause we are here to tell a story of our own, it’s all our own In our darkest night Right before us The voice of hope is rising up The voice of hope is filling up The voice of hope is lighting up the sky We are here to tell a story of our own It’s all our own

Bear witness to the existence of love in this cold world And may those to whom love is a stranger find in you generous friends.

about

On “Orchid,” K.C. brings together powerful vocals that call to mind music’s finest female singers (Patty Griffin, Karen Carpenter, Emmylou Harris, Over the Rhine’s Karin Bergquist), with songs worthy of the top tier of contemporary/roots singer-songwriters (Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Nanci Griffith) and the familiar feel of a new generation of smart-pop princesses (Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles).

The 10-song set is led by the first single, “Broken Things,” and includes the Oklahoma history-inspired “Redman,” the gospel-infused, “Voice of an Angel” and the moving epic, “Story of Our Own,” written for the crtically acclamied documentary "Finding Hillywood.” The album also features Austin’s BettySoo on background vocals throughout.

“I used to hide behind my songs,” explains Clifford, “always toying with the truth, but never brave enough to lay it all out there. Not anymore. The walls came crashing down and I am laid bare. There’s no hiding on ‘Orchid’.”
